I had the same sense of "being there" at times and also of comparing their customs to behavior in the 21st century. The evolution of ideas on the Revolution within the context of the social "wanna-be" types is, as you say, far more intricate than we imagine these things to be when we study historical movements, and yet if we think of modern-day life, there is no less complexity in the constantly changing political climate.
